The birthplace of Henry V in 1387, Monmouth has fiercely guarded the Welsh heartland from invaders across the Wye Valley for nearly 1,000 years.The town is entered through a spectacular 13th-century bridge gate across the River Monmow, with a unique fortified gatehouse. Its medieval street plan intact, visitors are transported to a world of 11th-century priories, the old market in Agincourt Square and the Shire Hall Court Rooms unchanged since the trials of the Chartist leaders.Out of town, you'll find yourself in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, with the world-famous Tintern Abbey, the Forest of Dean and Offa's Dyke to hand.
